After 30 days in the heat of the New Mexican desert, the chill of the early morning Colorado mountain air was definitely refreshing. This morning we woke up early to fly fish!
We slipped on our waders and laced up our boots at Breckenridge Outfitters. There we met our guide John. We knew we were in good hands by the looks of John's sun tanned cheeks and relaxed demeanor. We were right! As we piled into his truck, we learned more about John. Coming from a military family, he had spent his childhood hopping around the world, and had managed to fish all over the globe. He gave up his career in water systems engineering for life on the water.
Though today was my first time ever fishing and I was feeling a little green, Tiffany has been fishing since a young age. Her life long enthusiasm for the sport convinced me to give it a shot. From the very first moment we spotted a fisherman from the side of the road in the Carson National Forest, she was ready to shed her city habits and reignite her love of fishing.
As John was driving, our ears were popping - we were going up in elevation again to over 11,000 feet. With each pop, I knew we were going somewhere tucked away and beautiful. Finally, John revealed that we would be fishing in the reservoir where the headwaters for the continental divide begin. The moment I heard that, I lit up inside, this was different!
We quickly arrived at a stunning reservoir tucked in the mountains and before I knew it, we were knee deep in cool water with John explaining the basics of how to roll cast, present and retrieve. I learned to keep my rod tip low and pointed down toward the water and to try to just relax and sustain my focus while I waited for minutes at a time for a fish to hopefully swim by.
While all of this was new to me, Tiffany was off and fishing - making her first catch in minutes. The rainbow trout were biting! As a novice, I was incredibly grateful to have an experienced guide! I would definitely recommend booking guided trip, it made the whole experience much less intimidating and a fun learning experience.
After trying several different flies and with John’s help I, managed to reel in this little guy.
At each road trip destination we've managed to pick up a little souvenir to remember our visit. These flies will forever remind me of Breckenridge! After that day we piled back into the car and started the long drive west to Portland, Oregon to be urban explorers again. Stay tuned for new adventures! Onward!
