At Designhype, we are women travelers with a passion for design!
How we started
Tiffany's friend Beth carried a fold out map for over a year in New York City. Tiffany wanted to make navigating easier for her and other women travelers. The Metro + City Cuff collection was born and so was Designhype.
Okay, that was the quick version. The longer story is that I was working on my thesis project entitled "Solo" in grad school (back in 2008). The focus was women traveling the world alone. I wrote a 280 page book, interviewed over 40 women and designed 9 products. One of which was the NYC Metro Cuff and yes, it came from my interview with Beth. She was tired of looking like a tourist in her new city, the map bracelet was born!
The Designhype Ladies
I am the Creative Director and Founder of Designhype, a company which combines two of her lifelong passions: design and travel. Tiffany is also a visiting professor at Pratt Institute, teaching courses on design entrepreneurship. Being that both of her parents are entrepreneurs Tiffany always knew she wanted to start her own business (or businesses). She holds a Master of Industrial Design from Pratt Institute and a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Design from The University of the Arts.
I have been obsessed with exploring the world for as long as I can remember. My travels have included: Turkey, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Germany, Belgium, France, Great Britain, Canada, Puerto Rico, Costa Rica.
Can't forget the USA! One of the most beautiful countries to explore, I've been to 40 states so far! Alabama, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, Wyoming.
Tracey Malovich is Tiffany's older sister last, mom first and Designhype's sales-woman-of-the-year. Tracey worked in the pharmaceutical industry for many years after her even longer stint in retail. Her expertise in travel is one which involves her three children and husband. She's never been to Europe even though she's tried to on multiple occasions. Feel free to nudge her to do it already!
What We Design:
We've been creating map bracelets since 2009. Back then we only sold our NYC Metro Cuff map bracelet
but things quickly changed when it kind of went viral after only a few months in business. That's when we started working on our Milan Metro Cuff map bracelet
and our London Tube Cuff bracelet
. Since then we've designed Berlin map bracelets
, Paris Metro Cuff bracelets
, Los Angeles City map bracelets
, Philadelphia City map bracelets
, Boston City map bracelets
, Chicago Metro Cuff bracelets
, San Francisco Metro Cuff bracelets
, Portland City map bracelets
, Toronto City Map Bracelets
and Seattle City map bracelets
. We've also designed and made many custom bracelets
for retailers around the USA. These include Downtown Los Angeles map bracelets for the LA Philharmonic at the Walt Disney Concert Hall, Tucson map bracelets, Michigan Lakes map bracelets, Lancaster map bracelets, Downtown Las Vegas map bracelets, Drexel University map bracelets, and a few custom necklace designs.
As we evolved as a small design company, we've been starting to sell our neighborhood maps as prints on canvas and paper and downloadable prints. Our neighborhood maps are now made into tote bags and cosmetic bags as well. We currently have cities including New York City, Paris, Chicago, Philly, Miami, and Vancouver
We've even ventured into designing blank journals with Eiffel Towers, London-inspired Big Ben, the London Eye, and the iconic London Telephone Booths. Some of those graphic design are also printed on baby onesies too!
Lastly, our Eiffel, Chrysler, and Big Ben necklaces were inspired by the architecture we know and love!
Our cuffs and necklaces are:
- 18K gold cuffs and necklaces are coated using advanced, environmentally-friendly processes
- made in a safe environment
Our packaging is designed to:
- cut down on the use of plastic bubble wrap and bags
- be recycled
We work with manufacturers who:
- have certifications for their businesses
- pose no threat in terms of health and safety of their employees
Our Travel Guides are:
Our mini travel guides started as a request from friends and family to help them with their travels (I travel often). I decided to put the Portland Travel Guide on my blog and Pin it on Pinterest and now it's downloaded over 600 times!
